The Princess of Wales Wears the Greville Chandelier Earrings at the BAFTAs

At the BAFTAs on Sunday night, the Princess of Wales paired a plush pink Gucci gown with the Greville Chandelier Earrings, a Cartier set with a clear royal provenance that runs from Margaret Greville to Queen Elizabeth II.

The Princess of Wales returned to the BAFTAs on Sunday night alongside the Prince William, wearing a plush pink Gucci evening gown. The look marked her first appearance at the awards since 2023, while Prince William made his first BAFTAs appearance since 2024.

The defining detail was jewellery. She wore the Greville Chandelier Earrings, a pair made by Cartier between 1918 and 1929, set in platinum and composed with modern cut diamonds in an Art Deco design.

The earrings trace back to Margaret Greville, a society figure and close friend of Queen Mary. After Greville’s death, they became part of a jewel collection bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. She and King George VI later gifted the earrings to the then Princess Elizabeth for her 1947 wedding to Prince Philip.

They became a regular choice for Queen Elizabeth II, particularly across the 1950s and 1960s. More recently, the Princess of Wales has made the earrings part of her own formal rotation, selecting them for black tie and white tie engagements including the 2023 Diplomatic Corps reception, where she paired them with a Jenny Packham gown and the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara.

The earrings were most recently seen again at the Royal Variety Performance 2025, worn with another off the shoulder evening dress. Two appearances within a short span suggests a settled approach to red carpet dressing, with a recognisable silhouette and a single heirloom piece doing the work.

The Princess of Wales last wore the same Gucci evening gown at the 100 Women in Finance gala dinner at the Victoria and Albert Museum in February 2019. This year’s BAFTAs appearance also followed a 2024 ceremony she missed while recovering from surgery.

Prince William has attended the awards on eight occasions since his appointment as President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2010. His most recent appearance was in 2024, while he missed the 2021 ceremony when it was held the day after the death of his grandfather, Prince Philip.
